Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 2546

This specimen was lot 2546 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €280 (about US$355 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZEELAND, Provincie, AR dukaton (zilveren rijder), 1662. Vz/ Ridder te paard n.r. boven provinciewapen. Kz/ Gekroond generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. goede Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, silver ducaton of 1662. Obverse: mounted knight charges right over the provincial arms; reverse: arms of the Generality supported by two lions. Good very fine.)"

This type was struck 1659-72. The SCWC notes that the inner circle of dots, shown here, was modified to a solid circle in 1668. Zeeland struck ducatons until 1791. Double ducatons exist.

Specification: 32.78 g, 0.941 fine silver, 43.5 mm diameter, this specimen 32,46 g.
