Künker sale 352, lot 2187

This specimen was lot 2187 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRZBURG, BISTUM, Franz Ludwig von Erthal, 1779-1795. Goldgulden 1790, Würzburg. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Würzburg, Francis Louis of Erthal, 1779-95, goldgulden of 1790, Wurzburg mint. Extremely fine.)"

This prelate also struck some rare ducats (KM 421, 424). His successor, Georg Karl von Fechenbach, was the last prince, as the state was partitioned in 1802, most of it going to Bavaria. St. Burkhard is featured on the reverse. It was unusual at this time to stamp the denomination on gold coins; perhaps the bishop felt it was necessary because of the debased alloy.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, .770 fine gold, this specimen 3.25 g.

Catalog reference: KM 436, Fr-3737; Helmschrott 863.
