Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74170
SB223-74170r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74170 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. West Friesland. Ducaton, 1785. NGC EF-40. A pleasant example, this piece displays good details, despite some handling and circulation. Some brilliance is retained, leaving this as a pleasant specimen." Altho the auctioneers listed this as a ducaton (Dav-1834), it is actually a silver ducat (Dav-1846) of a type struck 1707-08, 1746-47, 1752-67, 1770-76, 1781-96. The SCWC divides this into subtypes with various mintmarks; this one, without mintmark but with a cabled edge, was struck 1780-94. For Westfriesland, silver ducats are scarcer than ducatons.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.25 g, 0.873 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-1846; KM-128.3.
