Westfriesland 1772 1/2 ducaton
This specimen was lot 509 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$154 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WEST-FRIESLAND Het Gewest 1581 - 1795. 1/2 Dukaton of 1/2 zilveren rijder. 1772, Silver Type III. Ruiter naar rechts boven gewestelijk wapentje, mmt. haringbuis na omschrift. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal in cartouche. Kabelrand. Kleine klemspoortjes, vlekkerige patina. Zeer fraai +. (province of Westfriesland, half ducaton or silver rider of 1772, type III. Obverse: Mounted knight charges to right over the provincial arms, herringship mintmark; reverse: crowned arms, date in cartouche; cabled edge. Small clamp marks, uneven toning, very fine or better.)"
This mintmark was used on this denomination 1762-75. Overdates exist but none are reported for this date.
