CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 943

The first specimen was lot 332 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €400 (about US$515 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "piedfort dukaton of zilveren rijder. 1666. type i. Ruiter naar rechts boven gewestelijk wapentje, mmt. vijf-bladige bloem aan het begin van het omschrift. Kz. gekroond wapen, jaartal boven de kroon. Piedfort op dubbele zwaarte van 64.90 g. RRR. uiterst zeldzaam. Zeer fraai. uit veiling Schulman 283 van 17 mrt. 1986, no. 140." The second specimen was lot 943 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $3,062.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "LOW COUNTRIES, Republic of the Seven Netherlands (Dutch Republic). West Friesland. 1581-1795. AR Piedford Dukaton. Dated 1666. Knight on horseback galloping right, holding sword and reins; coat-of-arms below / Crowned coat-of-arms within leonine supporters. Iridescent toning, slightly double struck, hairlines. EF. From the Alexander Christopher Collection." This type was issued in various forms throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries until 1793, when revolutionary French armies occupied the United Provinces and terminated their independence.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 65.56 g, 0.941 fine silver, the first specimen 64.90 g, the second specimen 46 mm diameter, 65.52 g, 11 h axis.
