SB1024-73006r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73006 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. West Friesland. Campen Shipwreck Recovery Lion Daal[d]er, 1626. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details. Decently preserved and attractive, this handsome example exhibits the typical crude strike found on these issues with a bold complete date. The surfaces are slightly granular from saltwater immersion with evidence of an old cleaning, now subdued by rich mottled gray patina. A handsome example of the type rom this wreck. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Campen Shipwreck, sunk October 1627 off the Isle of Wight on the Needles rocks." Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Westfriesland for 1604-1713 with various mintmarks. This subtype was struck 1616 and 1622-29. Most dates are common but choice specimens are rare as striking quality was low.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4870; KM-14.5.
