Westfriesland 1587 rijksdaalder Dav-8867
This specimen was lot 2037 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €550 (about US$762 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, WEST-FRIESLAND, AR Westfriese rijksdaalder, 1587. Vz/ Bb. r. met klapmuts en geschouderd zwaard, tussen jaartal. Kz/ Provinciewapen onder toernooihelm, waarboven Westfries wapentje. Graffiti of vz. Barstje aan de rand. (Netherlands, province of Westfriesland, Frisian rixdollar of 1587. Obverse: capped bust right with sword divides the date; reverse: helmeted provincial arms. Obverse graffiti, edge defect, Very Fine.)"
This "prince's daalder" was struck 1586-96 along with a rare double rijksdaalder. It varied from other contemporary rijksdaalders (Dav-8864 and Dav-8865) in having the unnamed prince (William the Silent) wear a cap.
