This specimen was lot 2195 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "VIET NAM: Socialist Republic, AR 5 đồng, 1989, Phoenix, NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo." The SCWC notes that this NCLT was minted in Leningrad and given to the Vietnamese regime in sets with a ten đồng (KM 38) and a twenty đồng (KM 40). A gold 500 đồng (KM 41) was also struck in Havana but apparently not included in the sets. Vietnam was not issuing any coins for circulation at this time.
Recorded mintage: unknown but all proofs.
