This specimen was lot 31617 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Utrecht. Provincial 1/2 Ducaton 1785 MS67 NGC. A boldly struck example with a deep periwinkle tone blending to a rust tint, and reflective glasslike fields. Not only is this gem piece the highest graded by NGC for this date, it is the highest graded specimen period, and ties with one 1786 specimen graded by PCGS." The SCWC notes a half ducaton with a reeded edge for 1761-94 (KM 115.1) and a flowered edge for 1761-76 (KM 115.2). Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.
