Utrecht 1763 ducaton Dav-1832
The specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Utrecht 1739-64. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overyssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom. This specimen was lot 205 in Schulman sale 344 (Amsterdam, March 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted,
"Dukaton of zilveren rijder. 1763. Type IVb. Ruiter naar rechts boven gekroond provinciewapentje met stadsschild in het hart en titel …BELG: PRO: TRAI•. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal in cartouche onder het wapen, mt. stadsschild boven de kroon. Bloemrand. Vrijwel prachtig. Volgens de muntbusopening slechts een aanmunting van 705 exemplaren. (ducaton or silver rider, 1763. Mounted knight to right over over provincial arms. Reverse: crowned arms of the Generality, date in cartouche. Decorated edge, nice extremely fine.)"
