Sincona sale 76, lot 1305

This specimen was lot 1305 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 5,750 CHF (about US$6,980 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Utrecht, Provinz. 2 Dukaton 1659, Utrecht. Piédfort dukaton of zilveren rijder. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS61. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (Netherlands, province of Utrecht, piedfort double ducaton of 1659, Utrecht mint. Extremely rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"

The SCWC lists the single ducaton (KM 46.1) for 1659-73 but no double ducaton. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.
