Utrecht 1619 cavalier d'or Fr-286
This specimen was lot 25426 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $5,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Utrecht. Gold Cavalier d'Or 1619, MS62 NGC, sharply struck with glittering mint brilliance, a superb example of this early gold type. What appear to be scratches in the fields are actually die polishing lines. Very rare type in this deluxe quality." The cavalier d'or was struck by Utrecht (shown here, struck 1606-08 and 1614-24), Overijssel (KM 16, struck 1606 and 1616-20), Holland (KM 19, struck 1606-32), Gelderland (KM 18, struck 1606-28), Friesland (KM 25, struck 1607-28), Westfriesland (KM 27, struck 1621-27), Zeeland (KM 18, sporadic issues 1606-44) and Zwolle (KM 51, 1644 only). Despite what seems to be an extensive issue the coin is rare from any province. Utrecht may be the commonest as it is the only issue with a photo in the SCWC.
