Utrecht 1614 cavalier d'or Fr-286
This specimen was lot 3172 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NIEDERLANDE, UTRECHT, Provinz. Cavalier d'or 1614. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (Netherlands, province of Utrecht, cavalier d'or of 1614. Extremely fine.)"
The cavalier d'or was struck by Utrecht (shown here), Overijssel (KM 16, struck 1606 and 1616-20), Holland (KM 19, struck 1606-32), Gelderland (KM 18, struck 1606-28), Friesland (KM 25, struck 1607-28), Westfriesland (KM 27, struck 1621-27), Zeeland (KM 18, sporadic issues 1606-44) and Zwolle (KM 51, 1644 only). Despite what seems to be an extensive issue the coin is rare from any province. Utrecht may be the commonest as it is the only issue with a photo in the SCWC. An 1614/06 overdate is recorded.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 10 g, .920 fine gold, this specimen 9.90 g.
