Uruguay 1869-A 4 centesimos
This specimen was lot 72867 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "URUGUAY. 4 Centesimos, 1869-A. Paris Mint. Republic. PCGS MS-65 Brown. Tied for second finest with only a single example better, this high end piece has a bright brown patina and significant hints of mint red. It is strong for the grade with almost no flaws present, and the strike is exceptional. From the Cerro Catedral Collection." This type, along with a one and two centésimos, was struck at Paris (shown here) and Heaton, Birmingham, and is common in circulated condition. This denomination has not been struck since.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000 plus another 6,250,000 from Heaton, Birmingham.
