Uruguay 1869-A 2 centesimos
This specimen was lot 72870 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "URUGUAY. 2 Centesimos, 1869-A. Paris Mint. Republic. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. An even, unobtrusive patina provides this red brown example with a bright, magenta-tinged appearance. A brilliant near Gem, this specimen is tied with just one other example for the finest known in its grading category at PCGS. From the Cerro Catedral Collection." This type, along with a one and four centésimos, was struck at Paris (shown here) and Heaton, Birmingham, and is common in circulated condition. The next two centésimos was issued in 1901.
Recorded mintage: 3,000,000 plus another 2,000,000 from Heaton, Birmingham.
