Uri-Schwyz-Nidwalden (15)61 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 4507 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 17,000 CHF (about US$24,659 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Uri, Schwyz und Nidwalden, Halbtaler 1561, Altdorf. Die drei Standeswappen in Kleeblattstellung, dazwischen jeweils Blätterstäbe. Das Schwyzerwappen damasziert. In der Umschrift das Münzzeichen von Hans Joachim Gutenson (Sonnenrad). Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Nimben, die mindere Jahreszahl am Ende der Rückseitenumschrift. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Henkelspur und kleines H auf Revers eingepunzt. (Switzerland, cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden, half thaler of 1561, Altdorf mint. Obverse: three coats of arms are arranged in a cloverleaf formation, each with a foliate stem. The Schwyzer coat of arms is damasqued. The inscription shows the mint mark of Hans Joachim Gutenson (sun wheel). Reverse: A crowned nimbate double-headed eagle, the abbreviated date at the end of the legend. Of the highest rarity, Very Fine, Mount mark and small H punched on reverse.)"
This rare type is noted for 1561 only. The obverse legend, "VRANIE + SVIT + VNDERVALDE", expands to "Uraniensis Svitensis et Undervaldiensis", the three cantons responsible for the issue.
