This date from Denver is the key to the Mercury dime series of 1916-45. The 1916 Mercury dime from Philadelphia is common and the San Francisco issue is fairly common. This date's rarity must not have been recognized for some time as nearly all the survivors are heavily worn. It has attracted the attention of the unscrupulous and buyers are advised to purchase certified coins to avoid counterfeits. The coins dated 1916 and some dated 1917 have a deeper design and are more dished than the balance of the series.
