1916 gold dollar, McKinley Memorial

Authorization

Authorized by PUBLIC—NO. 20—64TH CONGRESS, on February 23, 1916 to fund the McKinley Birthplace Memorial, Niles, OH, likely in time for the 75th anniversary of his birth. This is the first multi-year commemorative since the Columbian half dollar of 1892-93.

Recorded Mintage: 100,000 maximum were authorized: coined, August and October, 1916 (20,000 + 26 assay); melted 10,023 of the 1916 issue only. 1916 (Net 9,997 including ?PF) 1917 (Net 10,000 including ?PF) Note: Proofs: 1916, at least 6; 1917, at least 5. See Breen {1977} pp.217-219.

Specification: 25.8 grains = 1.672 grams, 14.3 mm (9/16th inch) diameter, 0.900 fine gold, reeded edge. Designed by Charles Barber and George Morgan. The drab and uninspired design is believed to have contributed to the issue's failure to sell.
