Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1525

This specimen was lot 1525 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ETATS-UNIS, AV 10 dollars, 1891CC, Carson City. presque Très Beau. (United States, gold ten dollars of 1891, Carson City mint. about Very Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck at the Carson City mint 1870-84, 1890-93. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60, 1879-1906), Philadelphia (1839-1907), San Francisco (1854-89, 1892-1907) and Denver (1906-07). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. This date is the most common Carson City ten dollar gold piece yet the magic mintmark awards it a substantial premium.

Recorded mintage: 103,732.

Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, .483 troy oz AGW, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.

Catalog reference: KM 102, Fr-161.
