Stack's Bowers March 2021 Collectors Choice Online Auction, lot 92146
SB321-92146r.jpg

This type, struck 1864-73 in large quantities, is available in all grades. The denomination was initially popular but as bronze cents became readily available and the nickel five cents was introduced in 1866, it became superfluous and mintages dwindled. The two cent piece was the first United States coin to bear the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST." This specimen was lot 92146 in Stack's Bowers March 2021 Collectors Choice Online Auction, U.S. Currency & U.S. Coins, where it sold for $384. The lot description noted, "1868 Two-Cent Piece. MS-64 RB (NGC)."

Recorded mintage: 2,803,750, a better date but not rare.

Specification: 6.33 g, bronze, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 94.
