The three cent silver coin was introduced in 1851 to fill a gap left by hoarding of silver half dimes, dimes and quarters. The design was slightly modified in 1854 and again in 1859 but the denomination was issued in token amounts after 1862. It was finally terminated in 1873.

Specification: 0.75 g, 0.900 fine silver, 14 mm diameter.

Recorded mintage: 4,100 (a scarce date).
