United States 1854-O 10 dollars
This specimen was lot 3255 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$4,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"USA, 10 Dollars 1854 O, New Orleans. Liberty head type. No motto. Large date. Die rotation. Rare. PCGS AU55."
This specimen is one of a type struck without motto at the New Orleans mint 1841-60. Issues are also recorded from Philadelphia (1839-66) and San Francisco (1854-66). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. PCGS CoinFacts commented, "This is an interesting variety whose rarity has been overstated in the past. It is scarcer than the 1854-O Small Date in terms of total number known, but it is more available in higher grades due to a number being found in the Jackson Tennessee hoard in the early 1980s. It is one of the more available New Orleans eagles in higher grades but it is still very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and rare in Uncirculated."
Recorded mintage: 52,500 (large date and small date).
Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, .483 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
