Gold dollars were issued 1849-89, with type II (shown here) minted 1854-56. The bust of liberty was given an Indian headdress and the reverse was redesigned and the diameter increased. Altho not rare, the type II is harder to find than the type I or III and is priced accordingly. This specimen was lot 3762 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,550 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "VEREINIG STAATEN, 1 Dollar 1854, Philadelphia. Type 2. Indian princess head type. Sehr selten (Very rare). PCGS MS63."
