Sincona sale 101, lot 3665

This specimen was lot 3665 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 2,250 CHF (about US$3,391 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"USA, 10 Dollars 1855, Philadelphia. Liberty head type. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung, Very rare in this condition. NGC MS61."

This specimen is one of a type struck without motto at the Philadelphia 1839-66. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60) and San Francisco (1854-66). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. The 1855 is a fairly common date but most of the prize realized is bullion value.

Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, 27 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
