This type, struck 1816-39 in substantial quantities, is available in circulated condition. Many varieties exist and all are avidly collected altho the date is common as a whole. The year 1839 marked the introduction of the "braided hair" cent but the differences between this earlier type and it are minor. Gobrecht's new hub meant that there was less year-to-year variation in the design of Liberty.
