United States 1840 cent
This type was struck 1839-57 in substantial quantities at the Philadelphia mint. The introduction of steam machinery to the mint in the 1830's meant that this type is better and more evenly struck than its predecessors. It is the last type of large cent issued before the conversion to the familiar small cent in 1857, which meant that large quantities were saved in all grades, tho the handsome design looks good even in circulated condition. This specimen is noted as, "1840 1C Large Date. N-5, R.1. Grellman state c. Three relatively small obverse rim cuds are noted near 12 o'clock. Generally well struck, the die alignment creates slight softness on the upper right obverse and lower right reverse. Ex: Jerry A. Bobbe; Myles Z. Gerson (1/1974); Denis W.
