PCGS XF-45 ~ White Oak River Collection
US 1840C 5 dollars rev.jpg

For the 1840-C, the mintmark was moved from the obverse to the reverse, below the eagle. The mintmark remained on the reverse for the rest of the half eagle series. The 1840-1842 years make up the "Small Date/Small Letter" variety, with the date and reverse lettering noticeably smaller than subsequent years. This year is one of the rarest in the series, in terms of remaining survivors.
