This type, struck 1838-40 in reasonable quantities, is available in circulated condition. Stars were added to the obverse in 1838 and the obverse was modified again in 1840. This date is also known with a "small stars" variety and a substantial premium attaches thereto.

Recorded mintage: 1,992,500.

Specification: 2.67 g, 0.900 fine silver, .077 troy oz ASW, 17.9 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
