United Arab Emirates 1995 500 dirhams
This specimen was lot 1920 in Goldberg sale 112 (Los Angeles, September 2019), where it sold for $930. The catalog description[1] noted, "United Arab Emirates. 500 Dirhams, 1995. 20th Anniversary -Women's Union." This NCLT was accompanied by KM 28 (1000 dirhams). Oddly, this coin does not seem to bear an AH (Hegira) date. The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. The economy is entirely dependent on oil.
Recorded mintage: 1,000.
Specification: 19.97 g, 0.917 fine gold, 25 mm diameter, 0.5888 ounce AGW.
Catalog reference: KM-25.
