This specimen was lot 1017 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: 1 dirham, 1986, 27th Chess Olympiad in Dubai, only 6 examples known, PCGS graded Specimen-64, ex King's Norton Mint Collection." This type honors a chess tournament held in Dubai in 1986. The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. The economy is entirely dependent on oil.
