Tuscany 1828 5 paoli
This specimen was lot 30998 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy: Tuscany. Leopold II 5 Paoli 1828 MS65+ PCGS. Delightfully eye appealing, this true gem displays a soft, silty patina that evenly graces the obverse and reverse surfaces, with a stark "pullaway" effect expressed at the legends and outermost peripheries. The overall impression is one of immense quality and originality, coupled with a kind of visual allure that is rarely encountered." This type is listed for 1827-29. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. The five paoli was one half of a francescone, the Tuscan equivalent of a piastra.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 13.75 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30-32 mm diameter.
