Tuscany 1828 fiorino
This specimen was lot 52416 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Fiorino, 1828. Florence Mint. Leopoldo II. PCGS MS-66. Representing the finest of just three seen in the PCGS census, this robust Gem minor offers a rather deep cabinet tone along with intense iridescence sprinkled majestically throughout." This type is listed for 1826-42. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. This specimen brought triple the catalog value. The fiorino, originally a gold coin equal to a ducat, was in the nineteenth century one quarter of a francescone, the Tuscan equivalent of a piastra.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.88 g, 0.917 fine silver.
