Tuscany H3037-31209r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31209 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $18,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Florence - Tuscany. Leopold II gold 80 Fiorini 1828 MS64 NGC. A rare type, and only the second example that we have ever offered. The first example, an NGC MS61, sold in September, 2013 for a hammer price of $5,500. The current piece is far superior to that one, both in technical grade and eye appeal, and we expect the final price to reflect that. Among the finest known of this type." This type was struck 1827-28 only and is scarce. It is slightly heavier than a French 100 francs d'or or Sardinian 100 lire and, having a higher fineness, contains more gold. In 1800, Tuscany was occupied by the French and not returned to Hapsburg rule until 1815. Tuscany was forcibly merged with the kingdom of Italy in 1859-60.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.65 g, .998 fine gold, 31.0-31.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Mont-305, KM-C78, Fr-343.
