This specimen was issued by Turkey as part of the F.A.O. series. At this point, the 50 lira denomination was used for commemoratives only; the first circulating fifty lira coin appeared in 1984. Turkey issued an elaborate series of F.A.O. coins, including this gold issue from 1978. The obverse features stylized figures of a family while urging "Food and shelter for all." This issue was accompanied by a similar 2½ and five lira in stainless steel.
