Travancore in 1907

This specimen was lot 2729 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRAVANCORE: Rama Varma VI, 1885-1924, AR 1/4 rupee, ME1082 (1906), bold VF, R." This type was struck ME 1082-1106 and is fairly scarce. Travancore was a princely state on the SW tip of India adjacent to the Madras presidency. The later dates are posthumous. This example realized twenty-three times the catalog value.

Specifications: 2.72 g, 0.950 fine silver, 20 mm diameter, this specimen 2.68 g.
