Togo 1948 franc
The first specimen was lot 4640 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $47. The catalog description[1] noted, "Togo. Franc, 1948. Aluminum. PCGS graded MS-64." Togo, originally explored and annexed by Germany in the 1880's, was partitioned by France and England after World War One. The western (British) portion eventually became part of Ghana, while the eastern portion, after a period as a French colony, became the independent Republic of Togo in 1960. This coin was issued by the French for the colony before independence; it is rather scarce today. Other 1948 colonial issues, such as these from Cameroon, Reunion and St. Pierre and Miquelon, are common.
Recorded mintage: 5,000,000.
Specification: aluminum, 23 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-4.
