St. Pierre and Miquelon are a pair of windswept islands off the coast of Newfoundland and are a longtime French colony. In 1948, the Paris mint issued a set of denominations for the islands, one and two francs in aluminum. The islands were formerly important to establish French claims to a share in the Grand Banks cod fishery, now collapsed. The coins were saved and are readily available today.
Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.
Specification: aluminum, plain edge, designed by Louis Bazor.
