Steve Album Auction 53, lot 967

This specimen was lot 967 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "MADAGASCAR: French Colony, 1 franc, 1948, ESSAI piedfort (piéfort) strike, very lustrous, mintage of only 104 pieces, rare, PCGS graded Specimen 63." This type was struck in Paris in 1948 and 1958. The specification given below is for the circulation issue, not the piefort shown here. Madagascar obtained her autonomy in 1958 and complete independence in 1960.

Recorded mintage: 7,400,000 plus 104 pieforts.

Specification: 1.3 g, aluminum, 23 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Louis Bazor.
