Reunion is an island in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mauritius and is a longtime French colony. In 1948, the Paris mint issued a set of denominations for the islands, one and two francs in aluminum. Other denominations were added in the fifties and this type was reissued 1964-73. The coins are not rare but are less often seen than those of other French colonies such as St. Pierre et Miquelon or French Somaliland. A rare mule exists with the obverse legend "UNION FRANÇAISE" instead of the correct "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE."
Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.
Specification: 1.3 g, aluminum, 23 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Louis Bazor.
Catalog reference: KM 6.1.
