Reunion is an island in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mauritius and is a longtime French colony. In 1948, the Paris mint issued a set of denominations for the islands, one and two francs in aluminum. Other denominations, including this one, were added in the fifties and this type was reissued 1969-73. The coins are not rare but are less often seen than those of other French colonies such as St. Pierre et Miquelon or French Somaliland.
Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.
Specification: aluminum, 31 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-9.
