Reunion 1920 10 centimes token
This specimen was lot 74473 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "REUNION. Aluminum Hexagonal 10 Centimes Token, 1920. Paris Mint. PCGS MS-63. A fairly SCARCE and interesting token issue, this Choice specimen is tied with just three other examples atop the PCGS population report." This issue was demonetized by the Vichy regime in 1941. Reunion, a French colony in the Indian Ocean, is about 39 miles long by 28 miles wide and has a population of 873,000 (2023). The population in 1921 was about 173,000. Several volcanos are still active there. The main export, formerly sugar, is vanilla.
