Thailand CS1244 2 att
This specimen was lot 74760 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "THAILAND. 2 Att (1/32 Baht), CS 1244 (1882). Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. Rama V. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. Demonstrating sharp to full striking detail and rather bright surfaces, this piece does show subtle signs of a long ago cleaning but has since retoned to a somewhat natural appearance. There is no question that eye appeal is exceptional for the given designation." King Rama V had this series of copper coins minted in 1882, including a half att (or solot), one att and two att (or pai). This type was struck CS 1236, 1238, 1244 and seems to be common. Sixty four att made a baht, and five baht equalled seven Indian rupees. The slide in the price of silver forced the regime to devalue the baht, and in 1902, one pound sterling = 21.75 baht.
Recorded mintage: 10,200,000.
Specification: copper.
