Thailand CS1238 4 att
This specimen was lot 72829 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "THAILAND. 4 Att (1/16 Baht), CS 1238 (1876). Rama V. NGC AU-50. A nice and wholesome example of this large copper issue displaying rich chocolate brown patina with minor deposits in the crecasses offering much originality." This early milled type was struck in 1874 and 1876. King Rama V had this series of copper coins minted including a half att (or solot), one att and two att (or pai). Sixty four att made a baht, and five baht equalled seven Indian rupees. The slide in the price of silver forced the regime to devalue the baht, and in 1902, one pound sterling = 21.75 baht.
