Thailand CS1244 1/2 att
This specimen was lot 33693 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "THAILAND. 1/2 Att, CS 1244 (1882). Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. Rama V. PCGS MS-63 Red Brown. A beautiful Mint fresh example, with good retained bright mint red, with sharp details and handsome luster throughout." King Rama V had this series of copper coins minted in 1882, including this half att (or solot), one att and two att (or pai). This type was struck CS 1236 and 1244 and seems to be common. Sixty four att made a baht, and five baht equalled seven Indian rupees. The slide in the price of silver forced the regime to devalue the baht, and in 1902, one pound sterling = 21.75 baht.
Recorded mintage: 2,560,000 plus proofs plus a few struck in copper-nickel (KM Y17a).
Specification: copper.
Catalog reference: KM Y17.
