Switzerland 1896-B 5 rappen
This specimen was lot 64 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 14,000 CHF (about US$17,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Eidgenossenschaft 5 Rappen 1896. Av. Frauenkopf mit Diadem nach rechts. Unten die Jahreszahl. Rv. Wertzahl in einem Rebkranz mit Weintrauben. Von grosser Seltenheit. Nur 16 Exemplare geprägt. Kleiner Kratzer bei der Wertzahl, sonst FDC. (Switzerland, five rappen of 1896. Obverse: woman's head with diadem to right, date below: reverse: denomination in wreath with bow. Of the highest rarity, a slight bump near the date, otherwise uncirculated.)"
The SCWC records the 1896 as a rare date for the one, two and five rappen. The type was struck 1879-1980 without change.
