Sincona sale 87, lot 3104

This specimen was lot 3104 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,771 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Adolph Friedrich, 1751-1771. 4 Mark 1752, Stockholm. Variante mit Stempelschneidersignatur F (kaum sichtbar, Carl Gustaf Fehrman) auf der Vorderseite und HM (Hans Malmberg, Münzmeister in Stockholm, 1738-1762). Vertikale Randriffelung. Sehr selten. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (kingdom of Sweden, Adolph Frederick, 1751-71, four marks of 1752, Stockholm mint, variety with engraver's initial F on the obverse and HM on the reverse. Vertical edge reeding. Very rare, Cabinet piece, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This type was struck 1752-55 and just misses being a crown. This example, with its unusual weight, must have been a mint sport or a presentation piece, carefully preserved.

Recorded mintage: 65,000 with vertical or diagonal reeding.

Specification: 20.80 g, 0.694 fine silver, this specimen 57.83 g.
