Sincona sale 87, lot 3101

This specimen was lot 3101 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$4,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Friedrich I. 1720-1751. 1/2 Riksdaler 1750, Stockholm. Mit der Signatur HM (Hans Malmberg, Münzmeister in Stockholm, 1738-1762). Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS64. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (kingdom of Sweden, Frederick I, 1720-51, half riksdaler of 1750, Stockholm mint, with minmaster's initials HM. Very rare in this condition, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This scarce type accompanied similar quarter riksdalers (KM 455) and full riksdalers (KM 457). These coins were minted steadily but always in small numbers, suggesting the country was starved of bullion. However, copper plate money was exported in large quantities.

Recorded mintage: 7,593.

Specification: 14.62 g, 0.878 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 456, Delzanno 76, AAH 100.
