Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 76762

This specimen was lot 76762 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUDAN. Silver 5 Pounds Piefort, AH 1401/1981. International Year of the Child. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo. A beautiful and nearly Perfect Piefort issue, with bold alluring brilliance, and deep contrast from the inky fields and frosted devices." The SCWC states a mintage figure of 2,587 for the piedforts, an improbably high number; we quote 85 pieces per Numista. Another five pounds for 1981 was KM 86 (hexagonal for the 25th anniversary of independence).

Recorded mintage: 4,785 + 85 piedforts.

Specification: KM 87: 19.44 g, 0.925 fine silver, 36 mm diameter; KM P17: 38.87 g.
