This specimen was lot 23647 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 1/2 Cent, 1908. London Mint. NGC MS-64 Brown. The only collectible date of a two year type. A glowing purple-rose color gives it a desirable individual character." The Straits Settlements began as a miscellaneous group of trading stations in Southeast Asia and gradually developed into what is now Malaya. The onther date of this type, 1904, is a rare proof-only issue.
