Straits Settlements 1899 20 cents

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73224

This specimen was lot 73224 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description^[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 20 Cents, 1899. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. A wholesome example with a thin gray toning, and bright luster remaining in the peripheries." The type was struck in 1871-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the substantial mintage. This date is common for the type.
